Every year our year 4 take part in the Young Leaders Award. We’re really excited to be involved in this programme which has been designed and written by the Archbishop of York Youth Trust. For more information visit www.abyyt.com. The Young Leaders Award aims to equip young people to be the change they want to see in their local communities, and through a number of interactive lessons and practical challenges our pupils will be involved in serving their community and making a difference.
We first entered the Young Leaders Award course in 2016 when our Year 4 class outstounded us with their ingenuity and ideas to make a difference in the local community. They wrote to their MP about local issues they felt needed addressing and raised money for local charities. They also involved themselves in picking up litter and helping out their own families by washing up and taking out the recycling bins. We were extremely proud of their whole class project:- putting on a performance and serving afternoon tea to members of the local community.
In 2017 the Year 4 children led the whole school in collecting shoeboxes filled with toys and gifts for Operation Christmas Child as their community project and then also collected Easter Eggs to take into the old people’s ward of Doncaster Royal Infirmary and visited the patients there to bring a little joy onto the ward.
At the end of the award each student receives a certificate and an Archie Bishop badge.
In 2018 we are delighted to have been invited to talk about our work with the Young Leaders project at the Archbishop of York’s Palace.
