Maths and Numicon

At Hatfield Woodhouse, we focus on developing depth of knowledge and application of maths.  We use cross-curricular opportunities for learning, as well as developing ‘real life’ understanding of maths.

We use the White Rose Maths Hub approach, which focuses on blocks of learning in specific areas to give children opportunities to focus to develop their mastery.

Out teaching and learning concentrates on developing children’s mastery of mathematics. Mastery involves three main focus areas:

Fluency - Children are fluent in the concepts of maths and are able to answer questions which require them to use their learning a variety of ways e.g. identify missing numbers in addition questions.

Reasoning - They are also able to use reasoning to explain the concepts, so they are also able to words to explain their understanding, justify their opinion or explain their choice of method.

Problem solving – They are applying their understanding in different ways to solve problems and challenges.

We believe that all children should be able to experience working on these three areas, whether they are starting to develop their reasoning and problem solving skills, or they are working towards mastery at greater depth.

Same Day Intervention - Simmering pots (KS1) / Car Parking bay (KS2)

During maths lessons staff identify children who may need additional support or challenge.  This can be for a variety of reasons, for example, they may need more support to develop their fluency or alternatively, it could be to give them opportunities to extend their learning to develop greater depth.

Bar Modelling

Bar modelling is a visual method of learning, which helps children to understand mathematical problems. It allows pupils to break down questions and find what the part of the question are missing in order to become completed.

Numicon is a multi-sensory maths approach which helps to raise achievement in maths. Numicon is designed to give children the understanding of number ideas and number relationships that is essential for success in maths.

In Foundation stage and KS1 we use numicon to support us in our learning. It helps us with our counting skills, addition, pattern work and many other areas of maths. The numicon pieces are colourful and interactive.

Have a look at some of the ways we use Numicon to help us in our maths lessons.
