Corporal John Harper

A past pupil of Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School who was killed in the Second World War has brought links between pupils at our school and visitors from the town of Merkplas, in Belgium. Corporal Harper is remembered by the pupils every November and a wreath is laid on his grave, as part of the annual service of Remembrance

We have been fortunate to welcome into school the principal of the Qworzo School and the previous principal of the Vriebasic School in Merksplas. The principal, Coen brought his guitar and sang songs with our children. He liked our colourful displays.

We have presented made and sent "friendship" boxes to the children of Merksplas to represent the best of Hatfield Woodhouse. Year 5 and 6 have also blogged with children from the two Belgian Schools. They write very good English!

A gift from Belgium, which the school displays with pride is the picture of a stained glass window showing the heroism and exploits of Corporal Harper liberating the town from German occupation. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery. We were delighted when the artist and creator of the window Frans Pelgrims, has also visited the school.
