  • Tour de Yorkshire Bikefest

    30th April 2015 - Simpsons Lane Academy

    On Wednesday 29th April, ten Year 5 children attended a BikeFest event at Nostell Priory.

    This event was organised in coordination with The Tour de Yorkshire international cycle race. Around 40 primary schools from across Wakefield took part in a fantastic day of cycling.

    The children had the opportunity to watch a professional trials bike demonstration and take part in a number of challenging races.

    All the children performed brilliantly and gave their all in every race.

  • Young Theatre Event

    30th April 2015 - Queen Elizabeth's Academy

    Year 7, 9 and 10 students were recently involved as the audience of an adapted version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Our ‘Elizabethan’ Main Hall set the scene perfectly. The performance began with a high brow opening where both staff and students must have been thinking they were in for a boring couple of hours.     The Vale Academy year 7 Football team are North Lincolnshire schools champions.

    The Vale Academy played Winterton in an incredibly entertaining final.  After some early pressure from the Vale Academy team resulting in the the Winterton Goalkeeper pulling off some excellent saves from Liam Jordan and Greg Watson the Winterton team broke and took the lead.

    Winterton quickly went 2 nil up with a well worked goal that the Vale goalkeeper Bailey Clark could do little to prevent.  In going behind by

    30th April 2015 - Craven Primary Academy

    On Thursday 30th April Years 3 & 4 took part in the first of three events as part of the Young Readers programme.

     Our school has been lucky enough to be chosen as one of only three schools within the area who are been sponsored by St Stephens Shopping Centre.

    The aim of the programme is to raise literacy levels in children and young people, by encouraging reading for pleasure and providing them with books to keep which they have chosen.

  • Roller Disco Reward Event

    30th April 2015 - Manor Croft Academy

    As part of the reward system at Manor Croft Academy, we reward those students who are engaged with their learning and who show great progress throughout the year.

    Term two’s reward was to hire in a Roller Disco for the day. Students had the chance to be taken off timetable to enjoy one hour with their Year Leader celebrating their success over the last three months. The day was a resounding success for staff and student relationships.

  • Mosaic Business Challenge

    The Apax Mosaic Enterprise Challenge is an annual, national competition during which secondary school students aged 11-16 learn about establishing and running a business through a business simulation game.  The competition is unique, in that students benefit from being  mentored by experienced business professionals who pass on their knowledge and skills about various aspects of business.     I would like to introduce myself to you all. I am the Acting Head of the Grove Academy following Mr Loach’s departure to take up a post with the Witherslack Group.

    I have been working for the Grove Academy since 2008 (when it was still the Harrogate Pupil Referral Service) as Assistant Principal and more recently as Deputy Principal, so many of you will  know me already.

    Where on earth could you see 555 very excited young readers, Robin Hood and Maid Marion, and a well-known radio presenter and author all gathered together to celebrate books and reading?  At the 2015 Finale of the Doncaster Book Award!  As ever, Don Valley Pageturners were there to enjoy the fun.

    British Science Week (BSW) is a ten-day programme of science, technology, engineering and maths events that are designed to inspire and motivate people to engage with the exciting STEM subjects.   • Fair Trade Fortnight

    27th April 2015 - The South Leeds Academy

    To raise awareness of the importance of Fair Trade and to celebrate Fair Trade Fortnight, a group at the academy decided to sell Fair Trade confectionary and baked goods during breaktime. The stall was a great success and sold out by the end of the fortnight. The group decided that they wanted more students to appreciate the impact of their purchasing decisions and so decided to use the profits from the sales to fund a Fair Trade Workshop run by the Leeds Development Education Centre (DEC).     Each year Manor Croft Academy invites the parents of new Year 7 starters to the school for a tea party. This year over 120 people attended, and a lovely afternoon was enjoyed by all. Students and Parents had the chance to meet key members of staff and have the opportunity to arrange specialised transition programmes in order to  help reduce anxieties for students and even more so parents.

    On Wednesday 22 April we held our first retreat with a group of 17 young people from Years 8 and 9 who had the amazing experience of visiting The Oakes Christian Holiday Centre in Sheffield.  The retreat lasted for two nights and three days and all students were amazing throughout their visit, having the chance to take part in lots of exciting activities as we were so lucky with the weather.

  • World Book Day

    22nd April 2015 - The South Leeds Academy

    World Book Day is a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) a celebration of reading. This was the 18th year of World Book Day, and on 5th March the   academy came together to appreciate books and reading. Staff dressed up as their favourite fictional characters, students participated in a ‘drop everything and read’ at the beginning of each lesson and during breaktime, there was a quiz in the library with some fantastic prizes.
